I have had a long-standing concern regarding the degree of disinfection that our vaginal probes undergo. I want to afford our patients the safest process possible. However, in exploring the various options listed by the AIUM, FDA and CDC, I have had significant concerns with all of them. These processes are all based on liquid disinfection solutions. I have been fearful that the vapors from these solutions will quickly end up in our IVF lab and worse, inside our incubators. I find all of these approved solutions to be potentially much more harmful than helpful to our IVF program.

We would like to see additional experimental investigation and Food and Drug Administration consideration of more user-friendly approaches to ultrasonographic probe disinfection.

Thus it is obvious that a conundrum exists. High- level disinfection is important and desirable but currently there is no reasonable solution that well- meaning healthcare providers can adopt. New methodology is clearly needed to fill the gap.
